The holidays are fast-approaching, and now is the perfect time to adopt a new family companion. When you and your family are adopting a dog, it’s tempting to lean towards adopting a puppy. What’s not to love? They’re cute, brand new to the world, and you’ll (hopefully) have them for many years to come.

But have you ever considered adopting a senior dog? Definitions vary, but a dog is usually considered “senior” after they reach the age of five. There are many reasons why you should consider adopting a senior dog. Below are several reasons that are most important to us here at The Pooch Mobile!

Senior dogs need love and a home, too. Many older dogs once had a loving home, but for some reason needed to be abandoned in a shelter. But just like puppies and younger dogs, they make loyal and loving companions.

Adopting an older dog may save its life. Shelters are crowded, and if older dogs aren’t adopted, they are unfortunately the first to be euthanized. By adopting an older dog, you’ll be providing both a better home and a “second lease on life”!

With senior dogs, what you see is what you get. Most of the time, when adopting an older dog, you’ll immediately know important facts like their full-grown size, personality and grooming requirements. And shelters often can share other important information, such as the dog’s medical history. This can make it easier to pick the right dog.

Senior dogs are “a few classes ahead”. Most senior dogs have been previously trained, and understand basic commands such as “sit”, “stay”, “come” and so forth. Most are also potty-trained and happily sleep through the night. A senior dog will save you a lot of time and energy that you’d normally have to dedicate towards training a puppy.

Older dogs are appreciative and make instant companions. This is our favorite reason, actually. Many adopters believe that senior dogs know how fortunate they are! Life is good and they are grateful for cuddle time, an extra treat, and all the attention you can give. A senior dog is happy to spend time with you walking through the park or playing a game of fetch.
