Food and Nutrition is Where it’s At

This month is all about food and nutrition; for dogs of course! It is important to make sure dogs are getting the right amount of food along with the right amount of nutrition to help them stay healthy all year round.

While meat should make up the majority of their diet, they can also derive nutrients from grains, fruits, and vegetables. These non-meat foods are not simply fillers but can be a valuable source of essential vitamins, minerals, and fiber. Looking for a dog food that contains all of those can truly help dogs keep a balanced diet along with a balanced meal.

For most dogs, it is best to feed them twice a day; usually once in the morning and again in the late-afternoon/night to make sure they aren’t being fed too closely together. It is also very important to make sure that dogs are getting the right amount of food fed to them to help them maintain a healthy diet. For reference: 1 3/4 cups per day if they weigh 30 pounds, 2 1/4 cups per day if they weigh 40 pounds, and 2 2/3 cups per day if they weigh 50 pounds.

It’s not just food that matters when it comes to nutrition, as water is just as equally important. It is important to monitor how much water your dog is having. Make sure they are getting enough throughout the day, and if not, make some simple adjustments. It may just be a case of needing to fill up the water bowl more or simply get a bigger bowl. The amount of water a dog should be getting is also based on how much they weigh but a good general guideline is that a dog should drink between a half oz. to 1 oz. of water per pound of body weight each day to help maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Hopefully, this information was beneficial and can help your favorite four legged friend stay hydrated and fed properly to ensure the best nutrition possible, as dogs do deserve the best!
